YouTube Copyright or Alleged Extortion? Creators Call Out ANI Over Strikes, Threats, and ‘Ransom Demands’

In a formal email to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, YouTuber Mohak Mangal has urged Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to intervene after facing what he describes as a “threat to India’s creator economy” by Asian News International (ANI).

According to the message, Mohak’s 33-minute video supporting “Operation Sindoor”—the Indian Armed Forces’ May 7 counter-terrorism effort—was struck by ANI for using nine seconds of its footage. The strike led to the immediate deletion of his video, Mohak writes, and ANI has since demanded ₹48 lakh plus GST to reinstate his channel.

“I am not emailing you only for myself,” Mohak told the minister. “The agency has threatened several other creators. This action violates creative expression and sets a wrong precedent.” He referenced Prime Minister Modi’s March 2024 pledge to empower digital creators as “ambassadors of India,” warning that such extortionary tactics could undermine that vision.

Mohak has provided the Ministry with email chains and call recordings detailing ANI’s demands, which he says are part of a pattern affecting multiple independent content creators. The YouTuber’s plea asks for regulatory scrutiny of ANI’s copyright enforcement practices to safeguard creative freedom and the burgeoning Indian creator ecosystem.
