Sam Richardson, Deputy Editor of Which? Money, warned that “more than 6,000 bank branch closures in just nine years underscores the seismic shift in our banking habits and the character of the British high street. For those reliant on face-to-face services, the impact can be disastrous. It is crucial that the government prioritises opening more hubs quickly, so people aren’t left behind.” GB News
High-street banking continues to contract as digital channels grow. Although many customers transition seamlessly to mobile and online banking, branch closures risk leaving rural communities and vulnerable individuals without accessible banking services. The June 2025 closures mark the latest phase of a long-term trend that accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. GB News
